The living heritage of Maya gastronomy and medicine.
In the jungles of the YucatΓ‘n Peninsula lives the melipona bee, revered by Maya communities for its biocultural significance: a wide variety of native flora in the region has been transformed into a gourmet product with a unique, delicate flavor, highly prized for its medicinal properties. This bee is especially remarkable for being an endemic species, threatened by climate change, deforestation, and monocultures.
The network of 61 Mayan meliponiculturists we work with keeps biodiversity and the ancestral traditions of southeastern Mexico alive.
